Hello hello and welcome BACK to Into The Real World - a publication designed to get you off your screens and back out into the wild. I’m back in Boston and even got some digits at run club last night (I’m making friends this is huge!!). Tonight I’m going to bar trivia and will report back next week on how that goes 🫡
I just had an idea: what if I make a rating system where I score activities on a skill of 1-10 on how affective they are getting you into the real world? Then I can make a quantified database of all activities referenced in Live from (Blank) and how well they work in relation to each other. It’s been decided - I’m going to do this starting today and I think I might be a genius.
ANYWAY, on to this week’s rundown:
In The News:
Visualizing the Daily Scroll of the Average Social Media User
I love a visual representation of data, and Visual Capitalist truly never misses. Essentially what this article and graphic explain is that the distance scrolled by the average social media user is equivalent to the height of the Statue of Liberty. That’s essentially the height of 15 houses. Our thumbs must be so strong!
In all seriousness, that’s a ridiculous amount of input for us to be receiving on a daily basis in addition to everything else we do. If you feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day (@me), cutting down the scrolling might give you back some time to get everything else done. Let’s aim for 10 two-story houses this week?
Touch Grass:
Plan For The Summer
This summer we’re going to party like it’s 2016 and I won’t accept anything less. How are we going to do that Jacky? We are going to PLAN. Planning starts now. If you don’t have anything on the books - now is the time to schedule it.
Now this can be literally anything from an all inclusive resort in Lake Como to a Saturday you block off to sit in your local park and do a summer picnic with a friend. The base principle stays the same: if you don’t plan it, it won’t happen. I could do a dissertation on the importance of making plans (the double virgo in me would have a field day), but all you need to know here is if you want to do something fun this summer, your best move is to take action and plan it now. For me, it’s very important that I find myself on a boat on a lake, ideally with a wakeboard. If you’re in one of my group chats, take this as a warning that peer pressuring for this trip will begin shortly.
Live from (Blank):
If you’ve had a conversation with me in the past few months, chances are I’ve mentioned Everybody Fights. I can’t stop talking about it, I’m OBSESSED (cue Cady Heron monologue about Regina George).
I’ve been to many a gym in my time, and I’ve never experienced anything like this. It’s a gym where people actually talk to each other. Even strangers! I genuinely can’t believe it and I’m also not sure how they have been able to maintain that culture. Maybe they pump pheromones in the air just like casinos do with oxygen. Whatever it is, I don’t care, I just hope they don’t stop. My favorite class for meeting people is “TRAIN” because you’re put in a group you rotate to different stations with, and inherently someone in your group will turn to you and say “what are we supposed to be doing at this station?” and BOOM you’re best friends. If you’re in the Boston area, you must go. I have guest passes we can go together (!!)
ITRW Official Rating (told you I was gonna do this): 8/10
Separation from Technology: 6/10
Ease of Stranger Interaction: 9/10
Community Building Environment: 10/10
ON THAT NOTE, have a stellar weekend everyone, let me know if you have any thoughts/comments/suggestions, and I look forward to hearing which parts of this newsletter resonated most with you all!
Til next time,
Jacky Norris
